CSP Abu Dhabi Terminal, the first overseas greenfield project of COSCO SHIPPING Ports Limited, has announced the start of a direct, weekly service to several ports across Europe and the Indian Subcontinent.

Operating from Abu Dhabi Ports’ flagship deep-water port, Khalifa Port, where the terminal was established as part of a 35-year agreement with CSP, and serving as a regional base for COSCO SHIPPING Ports’ global network of 37 ports, the new direct service will be served by a fleet of eight vessels on rotation, ranging in capacity between 10,000 to 13,000 TEU.

Direct exports from Abu Dhabi to the ports of Rotterdam, Hamburg, London, Antwerp, and Le Havre, will consist primarily of polymers while returning vessels will carry a mix of general and project cargo imports. The ports of Karachi, Nhava Sheva, and Mundra will also benefit from the new service.

Naser Al Busaeedi, Deputy CEO, CSP Abu Dhabi Terminal, said: “More than a year on since CSP Abu Dhabi Terminal officially launched, we are now well-positioned to bring our direct service offering to a global audience.

“Our new services will significantly increase the movement of cargo exports and imports between Abu Dhabi, Europe and India, providing our customers with solutions to tackle their international shipment needs, as well as the opportunity to target new markets.”

“Not only does this announcement bolster our existing partnership with COSCO SHIPPING Ports Limited, but it also ensures our other customers will be well positioned to broaden their horizons by engaging with new trading and logistics opportunities all around the world.”

Since its inception, CSP Abu Dhabi Terminal has facilitated the local manufacturing, warehousing, and logistics sectors to not only flourish within the emirate of Abu Dhabi, but to also expand their reach across markets in the Middle East, Africa, and beyond.

The direct services are expected to lend additional support to customers across the region and clients of the Khalifa Industrial Zone Abu Dhabi, providing faster transit and competitive rates for their import and export activities.

With expectations that the new offering will increase CSP Abu Dhabi Terminal’s weekly handling of cargo, the development is also expected to help add more feeder services from CSP Abu Dhabi Terminal.

In April 2020, on the passing of the first anniversary of its soft launch, CSP Abu Dhabi Terminal’s AED 1.1 billion deep-water semi-automated container terminal marked several milestones including the handling of over 540,000 TEU.

The close of April also saw the terminal achieve more than 1 million hours without lost-injury time, a feat that was realised thanks to CSP’s adoption of several global HSSE best practises including strong compliance with health and safety protocols within the working environment, and a drive to continuously improve safety performance across the entirety of the organisation.

Forging ahead, CSP Abu Dhabi Terminal will continue to monitor the performance of its direct service to Europe, along with other service patterns, and based on market conditions and business requirements, adjustments to vessel deployment, port calls, and even the launch of other regional services will be considered.

Konecranes has secured a key contract in the delivery of Automated Port Equipment services. The Kuala Tanjung Multipurpose Terminal (KTMT) recently signed a 12-month automation services contract with Konecranes Indonesia. The port has 8 Automated Konecranes RTGs. The deal was signed in July 2020 and will run until June 2021. Local inverter and digital crane specialists are using Konecranes Augmented Reality apps to liaise with Finnish engineers, ensuring updates, repairs and knowledge transfer are uninterrupted during the COVID-19 travel bans.

The KTMT Terminal is in a remote area of Northern Sumatra, with the nearest town being four hours’ drive away. Konecranes is the leader in the provision of automated port equipment, not least because it has the skills, service footprint and communication tools that looking after advanced port equipment, in any part of the world, demands.

Kalmar, part of Cargotec, has signed a deal to supply two Kalmar Eco Reachstackers that will help Maritime Transport Ltd cut fuel costs and carbon emissions while addressing growing demand at its rail terminal in Wakefield, England. The order, which represents the first collaboration between Kalmar and Maritime, was booked in Cargotec’s 2020 Q3 intake, with delivery scheduled to begin in Q4 2020.

Maritime is a market-leading UK-based intermodal logistics company with a network of 33 container and transport sites across the UK. After reaching an agreement with DB Cargo UK on 1 April 2019, Maritime launched its rail subdivision, Maritime Intermodal, which saw the company acquire four dedicated rail services out of Felixstowe and Southampton. As part of the deal, Maritime also took full responsibility for DB’s railfreight terminals in Wakefield and Trafford Park.

The new Kalmar Eco Reachstackers use a much smaller engine than the reachstacker solutions with large, high-horsepower engines that are traditionally seen in rail intermodal applications. This means they can reduce fuel consumption and therefore NOx emissions by up to 25% without compromising on productivity. They also offer an improved overall driving experience with smoother acceleration and less cabin noise.

Committed to supporting the Digital India and Ease of Doing Business initiatives, PSA Mumbai has launched a digital online payments solution for Direct Port Delivery (DPD) customers with ODeX. PSA Mumbai’s DPD customers will now be able to process their documentation and pay terminal handling charges on the ODeX platform from 15 September 2020.

A first for the Jawaharlal Nehru Port area, the online payments product is jointly developed by PSA Mumbai and ODeX. Termed “CLICK → PAY ONLINE → TAKE DELIVERY OF DPD CONTAINERS”, the solution allows PSA Mumbai’s growing number of DPD customers to take the documentation, payment and delivery process online via a one stop portal. The OdeX portal provides real time status updates, documentation uploading / amendment, e-payment and confirmation for delivery. With no requirement to maintain advance deposits, it also improves cash flow for the DPD customers.

One of the users in the pilot testing round, Director of Mungekar & Sons CHB Pvt. Ltd, Mr Prathamesh Mungekar said, “We are very happy with this new product, a first in the JNPT area and one which streamlines our operations. We are already looking forward to more developments.”

Managing Director of PSA Mumbai, Mr Sivakumar K said, “A rapid and seamless flow of information between terminal and users is as important as the physical flow of containers through the terminal. This product gives our DPD customers a fast, efficient and secure payment and documentation system to take delivery of their goods as soon as possible. With ODeX’s extensive user base, it is well positioned for widespread adoption.”

Managing Director of ODeX, Mrs. Liji Nowal said, “It is a great milestone for ODeX to Go-Live with our ePayments solutions for PSA Mumbai’s customers. Customers can now pay through a single click on ODeX – and the payment is confirmed in real time to PSA Mumbai. Thus any payments delay in cargo release is completely eliminated. During the current pandemic, PSA Mumbai has been very responsive to the needs of customers and I must congratulate the PSA team for ensuring that we have gone live very quickly with this solution, and becoming the very first terminal to offer seamless ePayment solutions on ODeX to customers. We are now “live” for DPD delivery payments – and soon hope to extend this facility to more customers.”
