Blume Global, a leader in global logistics and digital supply chain solutions, today announced that Hapag-Lloyd, one of the world’s leading shipping companies, has selected Blume Logistics to support its entire global network of motor carrier partners, commencing in North America in January 2020.

Hapag-Lloyd is one of the world’s largest ocean carriers operating a fleet of 231 modern container ships with a total transport capacity of 1.7 million TEU (twenty-foot equivalent units) and a container capacity of 2.6 million TEU, including one of the most modern fleets of reefer containers. Hapag-Lloyd required a solution that could help manage and ensure the highest level of quality door-to-door service capabilities across its network of motor carrier partners.

Blume Logistics, part of the Blume Universe of solutions built on the Blume Global digital platform, will digitally connect Hapag-Lloyd’s network of motor-carrier partners, which encompasses the complete order to settlement workflow. This includes the dispatch work order, drayage rates, appointment scheduling, accessorial charges, live tracking, proof of delivery, invoicing and robust reporting capabilities.

On the last day of 2019, YM MANDATE, a container vessel operated by Yang Ming Marine Transport Corp., carried Taiwan’s famous guava fruit from Kaohsiung to the other coast of the Pacific, the United States.

The vessel arrived at Los Angeles on January 14th. It’s the very first container of Taiwan guava shipped to the U.S. and passed inspection since the import ban was lifted by U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) in October 2019.

Taiwan guava is well received for its crispy taste and beautiful flavor. Since guava requires tropical environment to grow, Taiwan guava is particularly anticipated by North Americans.

However, it was difficult for Taiwan guava to enter the U.S. market, because Taiwan is an endemic area of oriental fruit fly, melon fruit fly and fruit pumpkin fly. Now, as all the quarantine standards and requirements are met, fresh Taiwan guava can be delivered to the U.S. and the local consumers can enjoy this high-quality tropical fruit from Taiwan.

To ensure Taiwan guava can enter the U.S. market, Yang Ming has strengthened communication with its client. Its salesforce worked together with ship crews to closely monitor and properly control the temperature.

Insecticidal cold treatment was applied to these fresh guavas and the temperature in the center of pulp was maintained at below 1°C in Yang Ming’s reefer container for 17 consecutive days during the transportation. After the arrival, Yang Ming appointed a team to assist the consignee and make sure the inspection procedure was completed smoothly and the batch of fresh Taiwan guava was successfully delivered to its U.S. importer.

Assistant Vice President Tan Wang of Yang Ming’s Commercial Reefer Department said “Cold treatment inspection to ensure extremely high standards are fulfilled throughout the transportation. The client – Top Quality Produce, Inc. is very satisfied with the success and impressed with Yang Ming team’s efficiency and capability.”

Yang Ming is always committed to upgrading its refrigerated transportation services. Together with cold treatment (CT), the company also adopted the new Active CA (Controlled Atmosphere) device for reefer containers to overcome technical difficulties.

This successful experience is a result of team efforts and marks an important milestone in Yang Ming’s refrigerated delivery service. The company will have greater capability to ship perishable commodities in the future. Considering the growing demand of the global cold chain market, the company seizes every opportunity to meet customers’ needs. South Korea-based container carrier SM Line made its inaugural vessel call at the Port of Portland’s Terminal 6, bringing weekly container shipping service back to Portland.

The 4,360 TEU vessel, the Qingdao, left the Port of Ningbo in China on December 22. As part of SM Line’s Pacific Northwest Service, the vessel made stops in Shanghai, Pusan, Vancouver and Seattle before calling in Portland. SM Line will complete its rotation with stops in Pusan and Kwangyang.

“We are excited to welcome SM Line’s maiden voyage to Portland. Their weekly container service provides an important option for regional shippers and will better connect Oregon businesses to global markets,” said Curtis Robinhold, the Port of Portland’s executive director. “It is such an encouraging sign to see Terminal 6 busy and productive.”

The first vessel call included nearly 200 containers being imported, more than 70 export containers heading to Korea, and 330 empty containers for local shippers to utilize for exports on future vessel calls.

While items will vary, the most common goods to leave Oregon in containers include hay and animal feed, agricultural commodities, and wood and paper products. Auto parts, furniture, bedding and lighting, and footwear and apparel are frequent imports that arrive on containers.

In addition to weekly container service, Terminal 6 will continue to operate as a multi-use facility that can handle containers, auto imports and exports, and breakbulk cargo – large items unloaded piece by piece, rather than in bulk like grain or in containers.

Along with the new SM Line service, the Port moves autos, grain and other bulk items at its three marine facilities. The Port also continues to partner with BNSF Railway and air cargo partners like Cathay Pacific Cargo and ANA Cargo to move goods via rail and air.

The members of THE Alliance, Hapag-Lloyd, Ocean Network Express, and Yang Ming are happy to welcome Hyundai Merchant Marine as a new core member of THE Alliance. With the FMC acceptance of HMM membership, THE Alliance offers an attractive upgraded product package and it will be launched around April 1st, 2020. Based on the existing comprehensive network of THE Alliance, the newly enhanced product package will offer increasing frequency particularly from South East Asia, as well as new direct port coverage and improved transit times.

The upgraded service package includes:

A new pendulum service replacing the existing Asia-Europe FE5 and Transpacific PS7 services with a new highly efficient design. This new service, to be further named, will be operated by 18 modern 14000+ TEU ships and provides added weekly Transpacific coverage between South East Asia and Southern California, thereby expanding the number of services directly covering this lane to three, in addition to FP1 and PS3.

A modified PS3 will offer new direct coverage of Haiphong creating more value and choice for the customers.

Further to the enhanced Transpacific coverage of South East Asia, a new Transpacific loop, PS8, focusing on Central China and Korea (including new coverage of Incheon) will be inaugurated around 1st April 2020.

For Asia and North Europe, the group will deploy two efficient 20,000+ TEU vessel services in a newly revised FE2 and FE4 design which will bring economies of scale and positive environmental benefits.
