HMM joins forces with CMA CGM on TTI Algeciras operation

HMM announced that the company has signed a sales and purchase agreement with CMA CGM for the sale of its 50% stake minus one share in Total Terminal International Algeciras, a container terminal in the south of Spain.

Shares of TTI Algeciras are owned by HMM and HT Algeciras which is a special purpose company wholly controlled by HMM. HMM directly owns a stake of 50% minus one share, with the remaining 50% stake plus one share held by HT Algeciras.

HMM has decided to sell its own 50% stake minus one share but still maintains its position as the largest shareholder through HT Algeciras.

The financial details including the price of the deal were not disclosed.

HMM expects a great synergy effect based on strategic cooperation with CMA CGM in terms of enhancing profitability and operational capabilities by securing additional cargoes.

HMM official said, “TTI Algeciras has a great geographical advantage to play an integral role as a transshipment hub located at the centre of containerised cargo flow on main trade lanes. We believe TTI Algeciras will take centre stage in the Gibraltar area as it has a high potential for future growth and development. We are expecting more business opportunities in the years to come based on stable operations of the terminal.”

This transaction, subject to regulatory approval, is expected to be completed in Q4 2020 for joint operations to be started.

Meanwhile, TTI Algeciras was formerly operated by Hanjin Shipping but HMM acquired a 100% stake in the terminal in 2017.

The CMA CGM JACQUES SAADE has joined CMA CGM Group’s fleet thus becoming the largest LNG-powered container ship in the world. A global leader in shipping and logistics, CMA CGM has made the symbolic choice of naming its new flagship after its founder, Jacques Saadé, a visionary and entrepreneur.

A unique naming ceremony for a unique ship  

The joining of the fleet of the CMA CGM Jacques Saadé was marked by a first-of-its-kind digital naming ceremony that saw the shipyard’s representatives in Shanghai and CMA CGM Group’s management in Marseille share an emotional landmark moment in their common history. Blessed by father Francis Fang, the vessel was then officially named by her Godmother, Tanya Saadé Zeenny, who wished the ship, the captain and its crew the best of luck on their future voyages with the traditional words “May God bless this ship and all who will sail on her”.

LNG, a pioneering choice aimed at preserving air quality and driving the energy transition

In November of 2017, Rodolphe Saadé, CMA CGM Group’s Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, decided to equip this series of container ships with LNG-powered engines – a first in the history of shipping for Ultra Large Container Vessels. The CMA CGM Group has thereby proven its commitment towards driving forward maritime transport’s energy transition.

Today, LNG is the most advanced solution when it comes to preserving air quality. It enables a 99% reduction in sulfur dioxide and fine particle emissions, and an 85% reduction in nitrogen dioxide emissions, going well above and beyond existing regulation. LNG emits up to 20% less CO2 compared to fuel motorization. This technology is one of the first step towards achieving CMA CGM Group’s ambitious 2050 objective of carbon neutrality.

Innovation-packed vessels, the result of 7 years of research and development from CMA CGM experts

These nine vessels are packed with innovations, the result of a long cooperation between CMA CGM’s research and development experts and industrial partners.

In addition to LNG motorization, the vessels offer advanced technologies:

  • The cockpit boasts the latest embedded digital technologies to assist the commander and crew, in particular for port maneuvers;
  • They feature a redesigned straight bow with an integrated bulb, a redesigned rudder, and a redesigned propeller all of which substantially improve the vessels hydrodynamics, thereby reducing energy consumption.

These 9 vessels bear a specific “LNG Powered” label that will be recognizable on all seas across the globe.

An extraordinary construction project that mobilized the know-how and expertise of CMA CGM Group’s experts and their industrial partners

From its design all the way to its operation, without forgetting its construction, The CMA CGM JACQUES SAADE benefited from the know-how and expertise of the best French, European, and global industry leaders. A number of specialized companies played their parts in this landmark construction project, including:

  • BIO-UV Group, a French specialist in ultraviolet-based water disinfection systems who provided the BIO-SEA system, a ballast water treatment technology,
  • CSSC, Shanghai’s shipyards who developed a globally recognized know-how and expertise in container ship construction,
  • Cryostar, a French expert in high technology cryogenic equipment who provided the LNG pumps,
  • Bureau Veritas, a French classification company in charge of guaranteeing the certification of the CMA CGM JAQUES SAADE and its sister ships,
  • BLM, a French company who provided winches and windlass,
  • GTT, a French technology and engineering company expert in membrane containment systems, selected for the design of LNG tanks and related technical services.
  • Schneider Electric, a French industrial group who designed the vessel’s electrical switchboards,
  • Sperry Marine, company based in the United Kingdom and responsible for radio navigation and platform equipment,
  • Total and Rotterdam port who provided LNG refueling services,
  • Wartsila, a Finnish gas provider who handled system and auxiliary systems,
  • WinGD, the CMA CGM JACQUES SAADE’s primary engine designer.

CMA CGM pioneers France’s LNG field of excellence in maritime transport

The CMA CGM JACQUES SAADE, along with its eight 23 000 TEU sister ships (twenty-foot equivalent unit) will be registered at the French International Register (FIR). They will bear the names of landmark Parisian monuments and other renowned venues and institutions from throughout the French capital (Champs Elysées, Palais Royal, Louvre, Rivoli, Montmartre, Concorde, Trocadéro, and Sorbonne). CMA CGM has chosen Total as part of a major industrial partnership to supply them with gas. Thereby making CMA CGM the initiator in structuring a genuine LNG field of excellence in maritime transport.

A first journey on the largest sea route in the world at the heart of exchanges between Asia and Europe

The CMA CGM JACQUES SAADE will start its maiden voyage as of September 23rd on the French Asia Line (FAL), CMA CGM Group’s most emblematic line between Asia and Northern Europe. Its rotation will lead it to the ports of Pusan in South Korea; Tianjin, Ningbo, Shanghai and Yantian, China; Singapore; Southampton, Dunkirk, Hamburg, Rotterdam, Algeciras in Europe; and Port Kelang in Malaysia. This line provides a weekly service comprising 13 calls over the course of 84 days.

On the occasion of the CMA CGM JACQUES SAADE’s coming into service, Rodolphe Saadé, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, declared:

HMM unveiled its land-based ‘Fleet Control Centre’ located at the HMM R&D  facilities in Busan, South Korea. This centre has been newly designed to effectively monitor and control the operation of HMM’s modern fleet including twelve 24,000 TEU and eight 16,000 TEU container vessels.

HMM has completed the delivery of its twelve 24,000 TEU containerships in September 2020, while eight 16,000 TEU vessels will be included in its fleet in the second quarter of 2021. All twenty ships feature the latest smart ship solutions.

The newly-launched Fleet Control Centre provides an integrated platform for vessel-to-shore data and increased connectivity. Its real-time monitoring system offers plenty of information with full visibility including vessel performance, locations, fuel consumption, ocean weather and cargo information etc. The vessels also can benefit from a remote control system which supports a wide range of vessel operations including inspection and repair works on the machinery on ships.

In addition, each vessel is encouraged to identify and react to an unexpected threat or obstacle both on board and around the ship by sharing information with the Fleet Control Centre in a timely manner.

HMM will continue to analyse the operational efficiency and explore the commercial viability of autonomous ships based on big data collected from the centre.

Jotun has signed the first commercial contract for container vessels with its ground-breaking Jotun Hull Skating Solutions. The contract was signed with global container shipping and logistics leader MSC, Mediterranean Shipping Company.

MSC, a company committed to investing in decarbonising its operations, will install the Jotun HullSkater, the first robotic technology that has been designed for proactive cleaning, and the specially developed high performance SeaQuantum Skate antifouling as parts of the Hull Skating Solutions, on the 14,000 TEU MSC EVA later this year. The solution will then proactively work to ensure an “always clean” vessel hull, with no biofouling, optimal efficiency, reduced fuel costs and significantly lower CO2 emissions.

Proactive approach

Jotun unveiled HSS to the market in March this year. Designed to help shipowners facing the most severe biofouling challenges, it combines the antifouling and robotic proactive cleaner, housed onboard the chosen vessel, with proactive condition monitoring, high-end technical service, and performance and service level guarantees. Jotun operators control the HullSkater via a 4G connection, conducting cleaning and inspections in line with individual vessel schedules developed through a proprietary algorithm and big data.

It is a unique proactive cleaning solution, delivering unique results. This, as Alberto Genovesi – Marine Global Key Account Manager, Performance Coatings, Jotun – explains, instantly appealed to MSC’s desire to invest in game-changing innovative technology.

Win-win for industry

“MSC is not only a market leader, but it is also leading the way in terms of exploring innovative new solutions to meet the IMO’s goals of decarbonising shipping,” he comments. “We have worked with them as a partner to provide premium anti-fouling coatings to their advanced fleet over many years and knew that HSS would chime with their ambitions to deliver both improved environmental performance and enhanced efficiency and cost control for business stakeholders. HSS is a clear win-win in that respect.”

MSC EVA will install HSS at GWD Guangzhou Shipyard in China later in 2020, at the same time as it undergoes class renewal and scrubber installation. The vessel’s flexible sailing pattern, with exposure to differing water temperatures and environments, leads to its severe biofouling challenge.

Jotun believes that if all ships facing such challenges adopted the HSS proactive approach – cleaning hulls before biofouling takes hold and therefore eliminating associated drag and fuel consumption – maritime CO2 emissions could be reduced by at least 40 million tons per year.

Sustainable vision

HSS has been developed over several years and brought to market by Jotun in cooperation with KONGSBERG. Comprehensive testing has been taking place on vessels, in partnership with leading shipowners (such as MSC) and at selected ports worldwide. Common for MSC and all the partners are their global footprint and their focus on development for a sustainable future.

The Jotun HullSkater, which utilises magnetic wheels to cling to vessel hulls, works to remove individual bacteria and biofilm before macro-fouling grows. At such an early stage, fouling can be removed without risk of damage to, or erosion of, coating nor brushes. This not only delivers peak performance, and unlimited idle days for shipowners, but minimizes the need for reactive cleaning, cutting costs, environmental risk and optimizing fleet flexibility.
